Project history: Good ships, but deficient in heavy armament. Carlo Alberto which could be distinguished from her sister by the presence of a mainmast, was used from 1902 for Marconi's first long range radio experiments at sea. Both vessels were designed by Eng Insp Edoardo Masdea.
Ship protection: 150mm belt protected full ship length and casemate, it was closed by 37mm deck.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: In 1907-10 Carlo Alberto served as a TS for torpedo ratings and gunners, and in 1917 she began conversion, in Venice NYd, to a troop transport, the work being completed in 1917-18 in Taranto NYd. From 4.4.1918 she was renamed Zenson, being recommissioned on the same day. Vettor Pisani was used as repair ship from 1.11.1916 to 27.11.1918.
