Project history: Ex-German Strassburg (Magdeburg class) received by reparations 20.7.1920 but commissioned by navy only 2.6.1925.
Ship protection: 60mm belt protected machinery and magazines (about 80 % of ship length), its thickness decreased to 18mm at fwd part, there was 40mm transverse bulkhead between 60mm and 18mm parts of the belt, aft part of waterline was unprotected. 40-20mm armour deck was connected with lower edge of the belt by 60-40mm slopes. Guns were protected by 50mm shields, ammo tubes had 20mm armour.
Modernizations:
(1921 - 1924): - 2 x 1 - 88/42; + 2 x 1 - 76/40 Ansaldo 19171926: + 1 seaplane (M.7, CANT.24 from 1931)
(1936 - 1937): 2 boilers with fore funnel were removed (13000hp, 21kts, 1330t of coal + 130t of oil); - 2 x 1 - 500 TT, 2 - 500 TT; + 2 x 2 - 13.2/76
1940 - 1941: + 4 x 2 - 20/65 Breda 1935, 3 x 2 - 13.2/76
Naval service: In 1942 Taranto was laid up into reserve. 9.9.1943 she was scuttled by own crew at La Spezia to avoid capture, raised by Germans and sunk again 23.10.1943 by Allied aircraft. She was raised by Germans, but 23.9.1944 sunk by Allied aircraft at third time. Later wreck was salvaged and BU.
