Project history: Built by SVAN under A. Bisio project in 1915 prototypes of the large series of "12-ton" boats of type "A". Boats ran long trials from November, 1915 till December, 1916 and soon after commission were converted to minelayers.
For the first time they were equipped with 10hp electric motors for 4kts silent running, boats can pass 20 miles under batteries. In December, 1916 both were converted to minelaying boats: TTs were removed, one MG was replaced by 47mm gun, boat could carry 4 mines.
Modernizations: 12.1916, both were converted to minelayers: - 1 x 1 - 6.5/80, 2 - 450 TT; + 1 x 1 - 47/40 H1901, 4 mines
1917, both: 2 Rognini electric motors for crouching were installed (10hp, 4kts)
1918, MAS2: armament consisted of 3 x 1 - 6.5/115, 2 - 450 TT, 4 DC
1919, MAS1: + 2 - 450 TT (ext tubes)
Naval service: MAS1 has sunk 25.4.1917 as a result of collision with MAS9. MAS2 foundered 29.10.1917 during a storm. Later (May, 1917 and November, 1917 respectively) both boats were raised and repaired.
