Project history: Ordered by the Italian Government from French yards (who also drew up the designs), these ships varied slightly, one group consisting of Regina Maria Pia and San Martino, and the other of Castelfidardo and Ancona. All were iron-hulled with complete iron belts and sides. After 1866, the armament and armour system were modified so that the ships, provided with a central armoured casemate, could fire ahead and astern (two guns forward, one astern). The armour for the end guns was removed. They were rigged at first as three-masted schooners, but during their long life, the rig was altered, first to barque and finally, about 1888-90, to two military masts with fighting tops.
Ship protection: Their sides were entirely protected by 110-120mm thick iron plates, battery had 110mm protection.
