Project history: Ordered during Cavour's ministry from French yards and designed as armoured floating batteries for coastal actions these vessels, the first Italian ironclads, were modified before completion into ironclad corvettes, able to fight also in open water, and their projected armament was reduced from 30 to 20 guns. They were rigged as three-masted schooners.
Ship protection: Their sides were entirely protected by 110mm thick iron plates.
Modernizations: 1872-1873, both: were reboilered

Naval service: Terribile was used as TS and experimental ship after 1885. Formidabile served as TS for gunners after 1887.
