Project history: The first Italian dreadnought and first-ever (when she was laid down) ship with triple turrets, the truth, she was commissioned soon after Austrian Viribus Unitis. The typical representative of the Italian shipbuilding school: ship protection has been sacrificed to armament and speed. As a whole on set of battle qualities she yielded to contemporary battleships of other countries.

Ship protection: Thickness of main belt was 250mm between end barbettes decreasing respectively to 100 and 76mm at fore and aft ends. Upper belt was 203mm maximally. Main deck was connected with lower edge of main belt by 50mm slopes. There were 24mm battery deck and 30mm upper deck over battery.
