Project history: Vice-Admiral Saint Bon, then minister of the Navy, proposed a medium-sized battleship, as a more convenient type for the Italian Navy and also as a reaction to the huge and expensive battleships of the previous classes. On his death (November 1892), the temporary minister Brin and the new one, Vice-Admiral Racchia, ordered some modifications to the original project. So modified, the Saint Bons were laid down in 1893. They had a low freeboard (only 3m from the upper deck to the waterline) and heavy guns of reduced calibre (even though the model fitted was a remarkable design), and were not powerful ships; even if one considers them as a half-measure between a battleship and a cruiser, it must be admitted that the speed of 18kts was low for a cruiser.
Ship protection: Ships were protected by 250mm belt on full ship length and 70mm deck above.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: Had it not been for the outbreak of the First World War, the Saint Bons would have been broken up in about 1914-15. The two vessels were commissioned before completion, Ammiraglio di Saint Bon on 1.2.1901 and Emanuele Filiberto on 6.9.1901.
