Project history: Ordered in April 1972. Designed in Germany as IKL/Vickers Type 206 or T540. Gal ran aground during delivery voyage but was repaired. Differ from Bundesmarine's boats in having different CT and equipment. Small and quiet submarines, excellent ASW units. They operated as defensive units providing early warning, surveillance and sabotage teams landing. Single compartment design.

Modernizations: 1983, all: + ability to launch Sub-Harpoon SSM (~4 UGM-84A)

1988, all: torpedoes were replaced by NT-37E

Naval service: No significant events.
