Project history: With negotiations ongoing since 2001, a contract was signed in 2005 for six Scorpene-class (Project 75A) boats. All six subs are built at Mazagon Dockyard with significant on-sight assistance from DCN. The last two units will be fitted with AIP propulsion (MESMA AIP systems), which require the addition of an 8-meter hull plug. Employ HLES-80 steel in the pressure hull, which permits diving depths in excess of 350 m. A 360-cell battery is employed. All machinery is "rafted" for sound isolation. Only nine personnel are on watch under normal conditions. The possible addition of the MESMA air-independent auxiliary propulsion (AIP) system would lengthen the hull and increase displacements from the figures given above. The UDS International SUBTICS (Submarine Tactical Information and Command System) weapons control system is similar to the French Navy's SET (Systeme d'Exploitation Tactique). The sonar suite includes a cylindrical bow transducer array, an active array, a passive ranging array, an acoustic intercept system, and passive flank arrays.
Planned next six submarines of Project 75I, estimated since 2023, will have AIP propulsion and carry Brahmos cruise/anti-ship missiles in vertical tubes.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: No significant events.
