Project history: Related research has been ongoing in India since 1974 toward the construction of an indigenously designed and constructed nuclear-powered submarine. In 1996, the program was said to be at risk of cancellation due to severe delays and cost overruns and later that year it was reported that initial trials in 1995 with a prototype reactor for the submarine at Kalpakkam atomic power plant had been entirely unsuccessful. The reactor, under design since 1985 at the Bhaba Atomic Research Center, Mumbai, was said to weigh 600 tons. Russia providing design and engineering assistance for the program since 1989. However, fortunes apparently changed for the better by around 2000, and a submersible test barge intended to launch trial missiles for the class was launched during 2001. Sea trials of Arihant began in 2014, in November 2016 she was transferred to the Navy but is yet not fully serviceable. Based on the Russian Akula SSN design, with the addition of a 10m plug containing four vertical launch tubes. Double-hull design with seven watertight compartments.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: In February 2017 Arihant was badly damaged by flooding, machinery spaces were foundered. She is in repair since 2.2017 (as in January 2018).
