Project history: Design is very similar to the previous Godavari class but with updated weapon and sensor suites. The difficulty in obtaining equipment ordered in Russia prior to the 1991 crash delayed completion, and first two ships were commissioned without a SAM system. The design is non-stealthy, with high, vertical hull sides, much topside clutter, and numerous corner reflectors. Have one pair of non-retractable fin stabilizers.
Modernizations: 2008, Brahmaputra; 2009, Betwa: - RAWS-03 radar; + 3 x 8 Barak SAM (VLS, 24 Barak), EL/M-2238, EL/M-2221 radars
Naval service: 5.12.2016 Betwa slipped off support blocks in the dry dock in Mumbai during repair. Ship was refloated 22.2.2017, repair was continued.
