Aircraft facilities (fd - 11,000 m², ha - 2,925 m² / 19,305 m³): Flight deck: 273.1 x 51.3m. Hangar: 130.0 x 22.5 x 6.60 m. There are 2 centreline elevators (20t fwd (18.9x10m) and 30t aft (19.2x10.3m)). 14.3° takeoff ski-jump and 3-wires arrested gear. Aircraft fuel stowage: 1500 t of jet fuel.

Project history: Negotiations to sell Admiral Flota Sovetskogo Soyuza Gorshkov to India began in 1994, and India signed a "letter of interest" 21.12.1998 to acquire the ship for free and modernize her with Russian equipment at Severodvinsk, where she arrived under tow on 13.7.1999. A contract for the transfer of the ship to India was signed 4.10.2000, and the vessel was transferred on 20.1.2004 for planned delivery in 2008. The carrier did not begin sea trials until 2012 with plans for delivery 4.12.2012 but handover was postponed until 16.11.2013 due to boiler malfunctions. Relaunch took place 4.12.2008 Conversion taken place at the Sevmash in Severodvinsk, Russia, with final outfitting done at Cochin Shipyard in India. Prior to sea trials, had not been to sea under own power since 1996, after she suffered a major fire while laid up during 1993 and a steam line break and subsequent 18hour fire at Rosta Shipyard, Murmansk, 2.21994. Has a deeper draft than the preceding Kiev class and also trims down by the stern. The boilers produce up to 98 tons of steam per hour. Fin stabilizers are fitted.

    The bow is being altered with a 14.3° takeoff ski-jump for conventional fighter aircraft, and no catapults are, thus permitting only short take-offs with arrested landings. There are two takeoff positions, each with a jet-blast deflector and aircraft detents. The ship was originally intended to carry 14 Yak-41M and eight Yak-38 VTOL fighters and 16 Ka-27-series helicopters. The angled portion of the flight deck is 195.0x20.7m. Adding wire-type arrestor gear reduced capacity of the 130m-long by 22.5m-wide by 6.6m-high hangar. Aft elevator was enlarged.
