Project history: In an attempt to reduce its dependency on the USN, the Greek Navy decided to acquire frigates of the Netherlands Kortenaer class, the first two units being ordered in 1980 and 1981 respectively. In order to ensure rapid delivery, the sixth and seventh units being built for the Netherlands Navy were purchased and replacements ordered for the Dutch. It was originally planned for a third unit to be built by the Hellenic Shipyard at Skaramanga, with Dutch assistance, but this was later abandoned due to financial problems. Instead further eight ships were acquired from the Netherlands 1993-2004. These ships have been fitted with lengthened hangars to accommodate the larger AB-212 ASW helicopters operated by the Greeks. Normally only one helicopter is carried. Phalanxes were installed
