Project history: The West German depot ship Weser was transferred to Greece on 6 July 1976 and renamed Aigaion. These Rhein class depot ships were designed to be used as frigates if necessary, and were armed accordingly. Because of the Greek Navy's pressing shortage of major modem warships, Aigaionwas therefore used as a frigate, as well as acting as a support ship for the missile patrol boats and MTBs. On the acquisition of the Kortenaer and MEKO 200 frigates, she was stricken.
