Project history: 29.1.1937 Greek Government given out to Yarrow the order on 2 destroyers under drawings of British H class, but with a number of differences. In particular, as main artillery German 127mm/45 SKC/34 guns were chosen, similar to installed on new German destroyers. Machinery completely repeated a prototype.
Ships went out on trials without artillery
(Germany refused to deliver it to the country of probable opponent, and guns
were installed already in Greece), but with TTs. Vassilefs Georgios on trials 24.10.1938 reached 36.58kts
at 1426t and 35109hp, and 33.9kts at deep load. Vassilissa Olga on 6hr
trials 19.12.1938 has shown 36.09kts at 33683hp.
Two more ships of this class (Vasilefs
Konstantinos and Vasilissa Sophia) should be
built by Greek shipbuilder at Skaramanga, but works were not advanced further a preparation phase and owing to
WWII beginning their laying, planned for 1940, was cancelled.
Modernizations: (10/1941-1/1942, Calcutta DYd, India), Vasilissa Olga: - 1 x 1 - 128/42, 4 x 1 - 37/80, 2 x 4 - 12.7/62, 1 x 4 - 533 TT, type 124 sonar; + 1 x 1 - 76/40 12pdr 12cwt QF Mk I/II/V, 6 x 1 - 20/70 Oerlikon Mk II/IV, 6 DCT, 1 DCR, type 128 sonar
Naval service: Vassilefs Georgios 14.4.1941 was damaged by German aircraft; 20.4.1941
she was scuttled at Salamis in floating dock; she was raised by Germans and 21.3.1942
commissioned by Kriegsmarine as ZG3 Hermes; she was lost 8.5.1943. Vassilissa Olga 24.9.1943
was sunk by German Ju 87 diving bombers at Leros island.
