Project history: In 1942 Italian Navy was ordered a class of 42 torpedo boats of Ariete class, from which 16 were laid down, and only lead Ariete was commissioned by Italians before capitulation. Remaining ships were captured by German troops in September, 1943 in various stages of availability; their completion was continued already for Kriegsmarine without changing of original design, only 450mm TTs were replaced by 533mm. In view of difficulties of a wartime ships differed by armament structure a little. In real conditions they can made about 28kts.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: Five ships (TA24, 27-30) served off W coast of Italy. TA27 was sunk 9.6.1944 by American aircraft at Porto Ferraio. TA30 was sunk 16.5.1944 by American MTBs PT552, 558 and 559 W off Specia. TA28 was destroyed 4.9.1944 by American bombers in a drydock in Genoa. TA24 and TA29 were sunk 18.3.1945 by British destroyers Meteor and Lookout in Gulf of Genoa. Three ships served in Aegean Sea. TA37 was sunk 7.10.1944 by British destroyers Termagant and Tuscan in Gulf of Salonika. TA38 9.10.1944 ran aground off Volos and 13.10.1944 destroyed by British aircraft. TA39 was lost 16.10.1944, being stricken by drifting mine S off Salonika. Others served on Adriatic Sea. TA36 was lost 18.3.1944 on a mine SW off Fiume. TA40 was damaged 20.2.1945 by British aircraft at Fiume and 1.5.1945 scuttled at Trieste. TA41 was hard damaged 17.2.1945 by British aircraft at San-Rocco, 1.5.1945 she was scuttled at Trieste. TA42 was sunk 21.3.1945 by British aircraft at Venice. TA45 was sunk 13.4.1945 by British MTB670 and 697 in Morlacca Channel. Incomplete TA46 and TA47 were damaged 20.2.1945 by British aircraft in Fiume and scuttled 3.5.1945, after war they were salvaged and completed for Yugoslavian Navy.
