Project history: Modification of VII series adapted for SMA mines, designed on the basis of VIIC series with additional 9.8m-long compartment aft from CT with five vertical tubes for 3 mines each. Also could carry 26 TMA or 39 TMB mines instead of torpedoes. The other equipment did not vary. In connection with lagging of production of SMA mines, submarines were used mainly as suppliers in Atlantic.

Modernizations: 1942-1943, most survived: + FuMO 30 radar, FuMB 1 Metox ECM suite

1943 - 1944, all survived were re-armed with following guns: 1 x 1 - 37/69 FlaK M/42, 2 x 2 - 20/65 C/38 or 2 x 1 - 20/65 C/38

1934-1944, most survived: - S-Gerät sonar, FuMB 1 Metox ECM suite; + FuMB 3 Bali, FuMB 6 Palau ECM suites

1944-1945, some survived: - FuMO 30 radar; + FuMO 61 radar

Naval service: U213 was sunk 31.7.1942 by British sloops Erne, Rochester and Sandwich SW off Azores. U214 was sunk 26.7.1944 by British frigate Cooke in La Manche. U215 was sunk 3.7.1942 by British armed trawler Le Tiger E off Boston. U216 was sunk 20.10.1942 by Liberator of 224th RAF sqn SW off Ireland. U217 was sunk 5.6.1943 by Avengers and Wildcats of USN VC-9 sqn from escort carrier Bogue in Central Atlantic. U218 was scuttled 4.12.1945 by Allies during operation "Deadlight".
