Project history: Ex-Italian transport submarines of Romolo class, captured in outfitting bassins (UIT1, 2) or on the stocks (UIT3 - 6) by German troops 8.9.1943, building of all six submarines was suspended from 13.9.1944. UIT1 was scuttled 9.9.1943 by Italians but salvaged by Germans, building was continued at Genoa but 4.10.1944 submarine was sunk by British bombers. Incomplete UIT2 was bombed by Allied aircraft 24.4.1945 at Genoa. Incomplete UIT3 was bombed by Allied aircraft 24.4.1945 at La Spezia. British bombers sunk incomplete UIT4 at Monfalcone 25.5.1944, UIT5 20.4.1944 and UIT6 16.3.1945 respectively.
