Project history: Ordered by Turkey in 1937 as Batiray together with two smaller submarines of II series but requisitioned by Germany with the Second World War beginning. She was designed as minelayer, but mines were laid only through TTs. In the remaining she was close to German submarines of IX series, the truth, differed by massive CT with 105mm gun, superficially resembling British-built submarines.
