Project history: Originally ordered as U7-11 for the Austro-Hungarian Navy, these UD type boats were built by Germaniawerft, and were purchased by Germany on 28 November 1914. Redesigned and reconstructed to German standards they were commissioned into the Imperial German Navy. Compared with other Austrian submarines of the time, without doubt these units would have been the best. Double-hull construction.

Modernizations: 1916-1917, all: - 1 x 1 - 88/27; + 1 x 1 - 105/43 TK L/45 C/16

mid-1918, all: - 1 x 1 - 88/27

Naval service: U66 was lost by unknown cause after 3.9.1917 in the North Sea. U68 was sunk W of Dunmore Head by gunfire of British decoy vessel Farnborough 22.3.1916.
