Project history: With the exception of U1 (ii) and U2 (ii), all boats were originally to have been of the Type 201. The order was placed in March 1959 to the particulars of this class. Because of the corrosive defects in U1 and U2, the hull of the following boats, U4-8, were covered with tin, and suffered severe operational restrictions. Construction of U9-12 was stopped until a newly developed non-magnetic steel could be produced. U1 and U2 were entirely re-hulled with this steel, their inner construction remaining intact. They could carry sixteen mines in lieu of their eight torpedoes. They differed from the Type 201 in having a a totally enclosed conning tower. U4-8 used only for training.

Modernizations: 11.1987, U1: received oxygen/hydrogen fuel-cell closed-cycle propulsion system, produced 150kW for battery charging.

1988, U11 as Type 205A: was converted to 'padded' torpedo target.

5/1990, U1: air-independent power plant was removed.

1992, U12 as Type 205B: - SRS-M1H sonar; + DBSQS-90FTC sonar suite

Naval service: No significant events.
