Project history: First submarines built in Germany after a cancellation of Versailles limitations. As prototype Finnish submarine Vesikko, designed in Germany on the basis of coastal submarines of types UB-II and UF of the First World War period was been taken. II series submarines differed from a prototype by increased machinery power and fuel stowage and improved manoeuvrability. These submarines received in Kriegsmarine nickname "canoe".
Single-hulled, with internal ballast tanks. Operational diving depth was 80m, maximal 120m; diving time was 25-35sec. Welding, widely used at building, allowed to lower hull weight. Differences between types were brought together basically to increasing of hull dimensions and fuel stowage. First two series originally did not receive artillery, guns were installed already during service. Instead of torpedoes submarines could carry 12 TMA or 18 TMB mines.
To beginning of war majority of boats of II series served in training role, but then they began to be got to take part in battle operations, including minelaying.

Naval service: U7 was sunk 18.2.1944 as result of underwater accident W off Pillau. U9 was sunk 20.8.1944 by Soviet aircraft at Constanza. U12 was lost after 23.9.1939 in the Dover Strait, presumably, on a mine. U13 was sunk 31.5.1940 by British sloop Weston E off Lowestoft. U15 was sunk 30.1.1940 as result of collision with torpedo boat lltis N off Helgoland. U16 24.10.1939 was hard damaged by British corvette Puffin and armed trawler Cayton Wyke in the Dover Strait and scuttled by own screw 25.10.1939 E off Dover. U18 and U24 20.8.1944 were damaged by Soviet aircraft and scuttled 25.8.1944 by own crews at Constanza. U22 after 20.3.1940 was lost by unknown cause in the North Sea.
In 1944 U10 and U21 were stricken and taken apart on spare parts.
Following submarines were scuttled by crews: U8, U14 and U17 5.5.1945 at Wilhelmshaven; U11 3.5.1945 at Kiel; U19 11.9.1944 at Black Sea coast of Turkey, N off Zonguldak; U20 and U23 10.9.1944 at Black Sea coast of Turkey; U120 and U121 5.5.1945 at Wesermünde.
