Project history: Double-hulled. This class of submarine cruisers was initially designed as submarine freighters with names. The Deutschland made one visit to the USA which was more a propaganda than a commercial success; her sister Bremen was lost during her first voyage; the third unit Oldenburg was never commissioned as a submarine freighter, since by then the USA had entered the war. From February 1917 they were converted to submarine cruisers, the other units of this type being built as such from keel up. U155 had originally 6 aw TT (3x2) on the deck, reloaded only in surfaced position.

Modernizations: 1918, U155: - 3 x 2 - 500 TT; + 2 - 500 TT (bow, 18)

Naval service: U154 was torpedoed by British submarine E35 11.5.1918 in the Atlantic. Bremen was lost by unknown cause, probably mined off Orkney Islands in her first voyage early 1917. U156 was mined on the Northern barrage 25.9.1918 in the North Sea.
