Project history: These iron-built colonial gunboats were an improved version of the Cyclop (1873) design. They sailed well with their barquentine rig, and were considered good seaboats.
Modernizations: 1890s, Wolf: - 2 x 1 - 125/21, 1 x 1 - 87/22, 1 x 5 - 37/7; + 1 x 1 - 50/37 SK L/40 C/92
Naval service: Hyäne was disarmed in 1897 and her rig reduced to steadying sails in 1905, by which time she was used as an accommodation ship. However, in 1914 she was used as a watch ship. Sold in 1920, she served as the three-masted schooner Seewolf (fitted with an auxiliary motor) until sunk in 1924. Iltis was lost in the China Sea 23.7.1896 during a storm. Wolf after use as a depot ship was broken up in 1919.
