Project history: Small shallow-draught gunboats for Chinese rivers.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: Tsingtau was abandoned 2.8.1914 at Kanton and scuttled 21.3.1917 to avoid capture by Chinese troops. Vaterland was abandoned 18.8.1914 at Nanking, 20.3.1917 captured by Chinese, commissioned them as Li Sui, later Manchurian Risui.
