Project history: Seagoing gunboats intended for colonial service. Seaworthy and manoeuvrable ships, had good seaworthiness and manoeuvrability also under sails. First two ships had ram bows, others had straight stems.
Modernizations: Panther, 1920: unarmed.
Naval service: Iltis 28.9.1914, Jaguar 7.11.1914, Tiger 29.10.1914 and Luchs 28.9.1914 were destroyed by own crews at Tsingtao to avoid capture. Eber was at Trinidad in the eve of WWI and in September, 1914 was interned by local authorities at Bahia (Brazil), scuttled by Brazilians 26.10.1917, when Brazil entered war. Panther was sold for scrap in 1931.
