Project history: The second series of M27 class minesweepers, order of 1916. M97 group was similar to M71-96 group, but with strengthened armament.

18 units of type 1916 to a beginning of WWII served as auxiliaries: Hecht, Nautilus, Jagd, Frauenlob, Hela, Havel and Taku as tenders; Von der Groeben, Adlers, Nettelbeck and Raule as minesweeper boat (R-boot) depot ships; Acheron as submarine depot ship; Delphin and Fuchs as gunnery training ships; Störtebecker, Sundewall, Arcona and Otto Braun as test ships. In 1939-1940 the majority of them was reclassified as minesweepers with assignment of former numbers. In the end of 1940 numbering was changed with introduction of new numbers of 500th series (for example, M60 became M560, M110 became M510 etc.).

Modernizations: M138 Nettelbeck, 1939: machinery was replaced by 1 Germania (stb) and 1 MAN (p) diesels (1680hp, 14.1kts, 90t of diesel oil)

all survived, 1940: were rearmed with artillery consisted of 1 x 1 - 105/42 Tbts/Ubts L/45 C/16, (1 - 2) x 1 - 20/65 C/38

Naval service: M62 was mined in the North Sea 9.8.1918, M63 was mined in the North Sea 28.6.1917, M64 was mined in the North Sea 20.4.1918, М68 was mined 29.10.1917 at Dünamünde, M83 was mined in the North Sea 1.7.1918, M91 was mined in the North Sea 10.3.1918, M92 was mined in the North Sea 1.7.1918 and M95 was mined in the North Sea 20.4.1918. M59 was sold to Latvia. M60, M61, M62, M66, M72, M81, M82, M84, M89 and M96 have been left in a fleet list. M74, M79, M80 and M90 were sold to Argentina, M77 was converted to merchant vessel. Remaining ships were handed over on demolition.

Ships since M121 did not participate in operations. After armistice all incomplete minesweepers (except for having availability over 95%) were broken up. As part of German Navy there remained M98, M99, M100, M102, M104, M107, M108, M109, M110, M111, M113, M115, M117, M122, M126, M129, M130, M132, M133, M134, M135, M136, M138, M145, M146 and M157. Italy received 4 ships (M106, M112, M119, M120) on reparations and bought 3 more (M140, M121 and M144). M97 was sold to Yugoslavia, M101 and M105 to Argentina, M139 to Colombia.

M85 was lost 1.10.1939 on a mine laid by Polish submarine Zbik at Hel. M61, M89 and M136 were lost 26.7.1940 on mines laid by British destroyers at Hoek van Holland. M132 was hard damaged 13.11.1939 as result of explosion of own DCs at beacon Lister and never repaired. M134 was sunk 9.5.1940 at Bergen by British aircraft, salvaged and 21.3.1941 commissioned again as M534, in 1943 converted to R-boat depot ship Jungingen and 27.9.1943 sunk by British MTB202, 204 and 231 at Le Havre. M504 was sunk 9.4.1945 by British aircraft at Kiel. M507 was sunk 15.6.1944 by British aircraft at Boulogne. M511 and M529 were lost on mines at Kolberg 3.11.1941 and 2.12.1941 respectively. M515 was lost 22.5.1944 on British aviation mine in Kiel Bight. M522 was sunk 20.3.1945 at Kiel by American aircraft. M533 was lost 9.5.1942 as a result of collision with minesweeping boat R45 NW off Boulogne. M538 was sunk 21.6.1944 by Soviet aircraft at Vyborg; salvaged, towed off to Königsberg and 26.1.1945 foundered during a storm at Hel. M546 in 1943 was converted to R-boat depot ship Von der Lippe and sunk 15.6.1944 by British aircraft at Boulogne. M557 was sunk 23.12.1941 being damaged by a mine during a storm at Rügen. M575 was sunk 2.3.1945 during a storm in Little Belt. M584 was lost 30.11.1944 on British aviation mine in Kattegat.

M120 of type 1916 was 9.3.1921 transferred on reparations to Italy as Abastro, in 1927 converted to minelayer and renamed Crotone. Ship was captured by German troops 9.9.1943 and 2.10.1943 entered service as Kehrwieder. Kehrwieder 19.4.1944 was lost at Spezia arsenal during raid of Allied aircraft.
