Project history: Rather cheap multi-purpose ships (Mehrzwecke Fahrzeuge) for actions in an inshore waters, could be used as escorts, anti-submarine ships or minesweepers. They had original machinery: one diesel worked through a reduction gear on 2 shafts. In 1943 12 units were ordered but building of only 4 was begun and only lead ship was completed.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: MZ1 was never fully commissioned by German navy, her trials were incomplete when war ended. In 1945 MZ1 was captured by British troops, her further fate is unknown.
