Project history: Unique German purpose built submarine chasers. The design of "War chaser" (Kriegs-U-Jager) was been developed on the basis of a fish trawler with adaptation under naval requirements. For improvement of seaworthiness the forecastle was lengthened, bridge was shifted fwd. Ships were equipped by single-shaft VTE, working on coal, sonar and had big DC stowage.
Totally 25 ships were ordered but only 21 were completed.
Modernizations: 1945, most survived: - 3 x 1 - 20/65; + 1 x 4 - 20/65 C/38, 3 x 2 - 20/65 C/38
Naval service: In days of war 12 units are lost. KUJ1 (UJ1219) was torpedoed 20.10.1944 by Soviet submarine V-4 at Nordkyn. KUJ7 (UJ1113) and KUJ11 (UJ1116) were lost 21.12.1944 on mines off beacon Feuerstein. KUJ8 (UJ1220) was sunk 12.10.1944 by torpedo from Soviet submarine V-2 at Berlevog. KUJ9 (UJ1433) was sunk 28.8.1944 by British MTB at Cape Antifer. KUJ10 (UJ1224) was sunk 15.9.1944 by Soviet aircraft in the Kongs Fjord.
