1962, Scharnhorst: new armament and sensors consisted of 2 x 1 - 100/55 Mle 1953, 1 x 2 - 40/70 Breda-Bofors 106, 2 x 1 - 40/70 Breda-Bofors 107, 60 mines, DA02, M40, KH-14/9 radars; bridge, mast, funnel were rebuilt

1962, Scheer: new armament and sensors consisted of 2 x 2 - 40/70 Breda-Bofors 106, KH-14/9, SGR-103, SGR-104, SGR-105, SGR-114 radars

Naval service: Scharnhorst served as gunnery TS, Scheer as TS for radars, Hipper was used for cadet training.
