Project history: Type 130. Up to 15 guided-missile-carrying corvettes named for German cities were originally planned to replace the Types 143,143A, and 148 missile boats. The program was cut to 5 in 2000. The team of Blohm + Voss, Friedrich Lürssen Werft and Nordseewerke (NSWE) (with EADS Deutschland and Thales as systems integrators) was selected in 2000, but the building contract was not signed until December 2001. The design is based closely on Blohm + Voss's MEKO A100 design, but the MEKO modular weapons and sensor installation system was not employed. Gearing problems caused three-year commissioning delays for F 262, F 263 and F 264; F 260 and F 261 were deactivated between 2008 and 2011 to correct the problem.
The propulsion system employs two diesel engines with a waterline exhaust system to reduce IR signature. The hull and superstructure are configured to reduce the radar cross-section to less than that of a Type 143 PTG. The class was designed to maintain 15kts in Sea State 5 and Beaufort Force 12 wind and to maintain 20kts on one engine. The flight deck aft measures 24m long by 12.6m wide and can accommodate a 12t helicopter, hangar accommodates two S-100 drones. The 76mm guns were recycled from stricken PTGs.
