Project history: All twelve boats of the 1912 fiscal year were ordered from Schichau, the boats being very similar to the 1911 design and having the same deficiencies.
Modernizations: 1916, S15 - 20, 23, 24: - 2 x 1 - 88/27; + 2 x 1 - 88/42 TK L/45 C/14
1917, S15, 18, 23, 24; 1921, S23: - 2 x 1 - 88/42; + 2 x 1 - 105/43 TK L/45 C/16
1921 - 1923, all survived: - 2 x 1 - 500 TT; boilers were replaced by 3 new ones, fuel stowage was 146 t of coal and 71 t of oil. Displacement was 650 / 749 t, endurance 1700(17)nm.
Naval service: S14 was lost because of internal explosion on Jade 19.2.1915, late this year she was raised and broken up. S21 was lost 21.4.1915 after collision with cruiser Hamburg in North Sea. S13 6.11.1914 in the North Sea and V4 in the same place 1.6.1916 have been destroyed after explosions of own torpedoes. S15 21.8.1917 at coast of Flanders was badly damaged by a mine and stricken a month later, S16 was mined in the North Sea 20.1.1918, S17 was sunk by mine in the North Sea 16.6.1917, S22 was mined in the North Sea 26.3.1916. S20 was sunk 5.6.1917 by British ships at Flanders coast.
S23 was used as TS from 1932 and as target controlling ship from 1939. She survived a war and was transferred to Soviet Union in 1946 (with target ship Hessen as Цель [Tsel`]) as Комета [Kometa].
