Project history: Order on first scout cruisers was given out 17.2.1941 instead of cancelled destroyers Z40-42 of 1936A(Mob) type. However these ships were still named Z40-42 till December, 1941, when they were renamed as SP1-3 (Spähkreuzers or scout cruisers) in parallel with old names (Z40-42)... Rate of building was lowered after British air raid on Kiel in spring 1941, and really only SP1 was laid down. Her building was suspended in mid-1942 in hull was broken up on the stocks next year. Ordered for Germaniawerft SP2 and 3 were never really laid down but preparation works were conducted. Planned SP4-6 were never ordered, only orders on main turbines were placed.
Ship protection: Light armour protected local areas of ship. There was no full belt, only magazines had 15-12mm box protection. 10mm main deck had 12mm slopes, upper deck had 15mm plating. Underwater protection consisted of 15-12mm longitudinal bulkhead. Turrets had 30mm faces and 20mm sides, rears and roofs. Fore and aft bridges had 10mm sides and 15mm roofs.
