Project history: At creation of type 1936 destroyers lacks of predecessors have been considered. At the expense of more perfect hull form seaworthiness was improved, and last three ships received clipper (Atlantic) bow, which increased their length on 2m. Having moderated funnels height and lightened amidships superstructure it was possible to decrease top weight. Officially declared displacement was 1811t. Ships were equipped by Wagner boilers (70atm, 460°C). Construction of Deschimag-produced turbine gear units has been improved and it has appeared quite reliable. On trials Diether von Roeder made 40.45kts. The armaments structure repeated type 1934, AA MG arrangement was changed only.

Naval service: Z22 Anton Smitt and Z21 Wilhelm Heidkamp were torpedoed by British destroyer Hardy in harbour of Narvik 10.4.1940: former was sunk at once, latter next day. Z17 Diether von Roeder, Z18 Hans Lüdemann and Z19 Hermann Künne were lost 13.4.1940 in battle against British battleship Warspite and destroyers in Ufut-fiord. Z20 Karl Galster was damaged 3.7.1942 as result of navigating accident in the West-fjord and was under repair 5 months; on reparations she was transferred to the USSR as Prochny, and BU in 1956.
