Project history: The design of this wood-sheathed protected cruiser was begun in 1887. Because of the power needed to obtain the design speed, which would be difficult to obtain at the time on only two screws, it was decided to try a triple shaft installation, the first time a German vessel had the machinery arrangement for heavy ships that was typical later.
Ship protection: Protective deck was 50mm thick amidships and had 70mm slopes. CT had 50mm sides and 20mm roof.
Modernizations: 1896: - 4 x 1 - 149/27, 8 x 1 - 105/32; + 12 x 1 - 149/32 SK L/35 C/92
1907: - 4 - 350 TT (beam)
1916: ship was rearmed with 1 x 1 - 149/42 TK L/45 C/16, 4 x 1 - 105/42 TK L/45 C/16, 4 x 1 - 88/45 SK L/45 C/13, 4 x 1 - 88/32 SK L/35 C/01, 5 x 1 - 88/27 SK L/30 C/89, 1 x 1 - 88/27 TK L/30 C/08
Naval service: In 1914 she became a gunnery school ship.
