Project history: The Irene and her sister were the first German protected cruisers.
Ship protection: They had a compound steel armoured deck (flat amidships consisted of 20mm iron on 30mm steel, slopes had 20mm iron and 55mm steel layers). Engine was protected by 120mm glacis oh 200mm wood backing. CT had 50mm sides and 20mm roof.
Modernizations: 1893, both: - 10 x 1 - 149/20, 6 x 5 - 37/17; + 8 x 1 - 105/32 SK L/35 C/91, 6 x 1 - 50/37 SK L/40 C/92
Naval service: They were broken up in 1921 and 1922 respectively.
