Project history: The Greif, a larger version of the Blitz design but without the torpedo armament, represents a further step in the evolution of the light cruiser. With her ram bow, three funnels and low silhouette she bears a distinct resemblance to much later vessels. However she does not seem to have been successful in service as she was given little employment.

Modernizations: 1891: - 4 x 5 - 37/17; + 8 x 1 - 88/27 SK L/30 C/89

1906: reboilered with 8 cylindrical boilers (5795hp, 19kts, 436t of coal, 3960(10)nm); - 8 x 1 - 88/27, 2 x 5 - 37/17; + 6 x 1 - 88/32 SK L/35 C/01

Naval service: After service as a mine hulk she was scrapped b 1921.
