Project history: The Bussard class were intended for colonial work, with their barquentine rig, ram bows and wooden sheathing.
Modernizations: 1900s: + (0 - 5) x 5 - 37/27 RV L/30
Naval service: Geier in 1909 was rebuilt and re-rigged as topsail schooner. The bridge was also enlarged. She was interned at Honolulu 7.11.1914, captured by USN 6.4.1917, renamed Schurz in June 1917, commissioned in Septenber 1917 and sunk 21.6.1918 after collision with s/s Florida off North Carolina coast.
