Project history: The basic design of this class dated from 1875, so they were obsolescent even when they were laid down. Marie and Sophie had single funnels, the rest two each, while the last pair were rigged as ships, unlike their barque-rigged sisters.
Modernizations: 1889, Olga: was armed only with 2 x 1 - 88/27 SK L/30 C/89, 10 x 1 - 7.9/79
1893, Carola: - 4 x 1 - 149/20, 2 x 1 - 87/22, 6 x 5 - 37/17; + 2 x 1 - 105/32 SK L/35 C/91, 8 x 1 - 88/27 SK L/30 C/89, 2 x 1 - 50/37 SK L/40 C/92
1893, Marie; 1895, Sophie: - 2 x 1 - 87/22; + 2 x 1 - 88/27 SK L/30 C/27, up to 4 x 5 - 37/27 RV L/30
Naval service: With their wood and copper sheathing they spent the early years of their service lives overseas. In 1893 Carola became an artillery training ship, and in 1889 Olga was converted to a school ship. Marie and Sophie served for a while as school ships. Sophie was not broken up till 1921.
