Project history: The basic design of this class dated from 1875, so they were obsolescent even when they were laid down. Barque-rigged.
Modernizations: None.
Naval service: With their wood and copper sheathing they spent the early years of their service lives overseas. In 1902 Arcona's name was changed to Mercur to free her original name for new cruiser.
