Project history: German AMCs intended for actions against merchant shipping at oceans and offen called as "commerce raiders". They were converted from cargo ships, armament was masked.

Naval service: Berlin was interned with fuel coal bunkers at Trondheim (Norway) 18.11.1914, returned to owner in June 1919 and in December transferred to White Star Line as Arabic. Cap Trafalgar was sunk in South Atlantic off Trinidad by British AMC Carmania 14.9.1914. Cormoran (former Russian Ryazan` captured in Korea Strait by cruiser Emden 4.8.1914) was interned at Guam 14.12.1914 by USA and scuttled there by own crew to avoid capture 7.4.1917. Greif was sunk by British AMCs Alcantara, Andes, cruiser Comus and two destroyers 29.2.1916 off Bergen. Iltis was formed British Turritella, captured 27.2.1917 W of Colombo, she was sunk by British sloop Odin 5.3.1917 off Aden. Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was sunk by British cruiser Highflyer 26.8.1914 at Rio de Oro (Spanish Northern Africa). Kronprinz Wilhelm was interned by USA 26.4.1915 at Newport News and 7.4.1917 captured by USA, used by USN as troop transport Von Steuben. Geier was former British Saint Théodore, captured by AMC Möwe 12.12.1916, she was scuttled by AMC Möwe because of her worn out machinery. Leopard (captured British Yarrowdale) was sunk by British cruisers Achilles and Dundee 16.3.1917 NO of Faeroes. Meteor was sunk 9.8.1915 in the North Sea by British cruiser squadron. Prinz Eutel Friedrich was interned by USA 9.4.1915 at Newport News and 7.4.1917 captured by USA and commissioned by USN as troop transport De Kalb. Seeadler (ex-Pass of Balmaha, captured by submarine U36) wrecked through negligence on Mopelia Island in the Societies (Pacific) 2.8.1917. Wolf (ex-Belgravia) was badly damaged during a storm in Elbe mouth and discarded.
