Project history: These boats were a modified repeat of the Kriegsmarine's wartime S-boats. They were designated as Type 149. The first three were ordered in February 1952 by the the Federal Home Office for the Federal Frontier Guard. But the projected speed of 43kts was prohibited under the terms of the Potsdam Conference and construction was stopped by the British Military Security Department. From the spring of 1953 construction of these boats continued, but officially on behalf of the Royal Navy. On 3 May 1955, after renewed negotiations, the Military Security Department gave permission for the construction of three more boats. The first three served with German crews under British command until their incorporation into the new navy on 29 May 1956. The fourth and fifth boats were commissioned by the Federal Frontier Guard (Naval) as S1 and S2 on 15 December 1955 and 2 February 1956 respectively. S1 and S2 were taken over by the navy on 1 July 1956 together with all the vessels of the Federal Frontier Guard (Naval).

Naval service: The last boat Seeschwalbe was deleted on 1 October 1960 and became a training vessel UW9. In 1964 she was rebuilt and served under her new name Wilhelm Laudahn (Y839) for the Trials Command 71 especially carrying out trials of new engines with a civilian crew. She was frequently modified and rebuilt.
