Project history: Submersible boars of modified Narval type with double hull ordered on 20 May 1899 and 1 May 1900. Designed by Maxime Laubeuf. Initial cost was £24,700 each. They were built like torpedo-boats and submerged by the admission of water into the space between the skins. Machinery generally similar to Narval. These boats could dive in 6 minutes (Espadon) to 9 minutes (Triton).
