Project history: Projected by M. Simonot as diesel-electric submarines, but in 1912 the decision was accepted to complete lead boat with steam surface machinery. Machinery of both boats have appeared unsuccessful: on Gustave Zédé it was too bulky and inconvenient in operation, and on Néréide diesels reached only half of designed power. In 1921-1922 Gustave Zédé received diesels from requisitioned German submarine U165.

Modernizations: 1922, Gustave Zédé: VTE were replaced by 2 MAN Q6 diesels (2400 hp, 15 kts), fuel capacity was increased.

1922, Néréide: + 1 x 2 - 450 TT; new bridge and periscope were fitted.

Naval service: No significant events.
