Project history: Built under the 1913 programme. Project of M. Hutter on the basis of Archimède. The prominent feature peculiar to a number of French submarines, unusual steam engines machinery and electric motors. On trials Dupuy de Lôme reached 19kts surfaced. After the First World War both submarines were underwent major repair; their steam engines were replaced by diesels from requisitioned German submarines.

Modernizations: 1922, Dupuy de Lôme: VTE were replaced by 2 Krupp diesels (2400 hp, 15 kts), fuel capacity was increased, CT was rebuilt.

1922, Sané: VTE were replaced by 2 Körting diesels (2400 hp, 15 kts), fuel capacity was increased, CT was rebuilt.

Naval service: No significant events.
