Project history: Built under 1926 (2 submarines), 1927 (3), 1928 (2 boats) and 1929 (2 boats) programmes. Normand-Fenaux variant of "630ton" submarine.

Modernizations: m. b. 1943 - 1944, all survived: - 1 x 1 - 8.80; + 1 x 1 - 20/70 Oerlikon Mk II/IV

Naval service: Six boats of this class were lost during Allied landing in the North Africa in November, 1942. Diane was destroyed by crew at Oran 9.11.1942 before occupancy of base by Allies. Méduse was damaged by aircraft and ran aground 10.11.1942 off Mazagon (Morocco). Amphitrite, Oréade and La Psyché were sunk by gunfire of Allied ships and carrier aircraft at Casablanca (Morocco) 8.11.1942. La Sybille was lost off Casablanca 11.11.1942. French consider her as lost on a mine, but loss of submarine from torpedoes of German submarine U173 is more probable.

Antiope, Amazone and Orphée in 1944 were laid up into reserve.
