Project history: Developed from the small hunter-killer submarines of the Aréthuse class, the Daphné was designed as a second-class counterpart to the ocean-going submarines of the postwar Narval class. Double-hull construction was used, and staff requirements emphasized manoeuvrability, low noise, a small crew and ease of maintenance. The latter requirement influenced the adoption of no fewer than twelve torpedo tubes (eight bow, four stem) with no reloads. Further reductions in complement were effected by the adoption of a maintenance system based on modular replacement. The last two boats incorporated a number of improvements, and have the Type 12 PA4-115 diesel in place of the original PA 1 model.

Modernizations: 1971-mid-1970s, all except Daphné: + DUUA-2, DSUV-2, DUUX-2 sonars

Naval service: Two sisters were lost in the western Mediterranean: Minerve (S647) 27.1.1968 and Eurydice (S644) 4.3.1970.
