Project history: Colonial steel-hulled gunboats with auxiliary barquentine rig.

Naval service: Surprise was 3.12.1916 torpedoed by German submarine U38 off Azores. Zélée landed her guns on Tahiti and scuttled 29.9.1914 at Papéete to block the harbour to avoid attack of German cruisers.
