Project history: Designed for service on Yangtze. Originally she should be sister-ship of Doudart de la Grée but construction was delayed between 1914 and 1918 and ship was completed under little changed design.

Modernizations: 1930s: + 1 x 1 - 75/35 M1897.

Naval service: Balny was laid up at Chungking in 1940 and scrapped in 1944.
