Project history: Normand submitted the design in the autumn of 1889 and they were ordered on 2.9.1890 (Nos 145-149, 152-154) from Normand; 9.4.1890 (Nos 155-160) from Gironde, engined by Cail, and (Nos 164-166) from the Graville-Le Havre yard of F C de la Méditerranée; 16.4.1890 (Nos 161-163) from Loire; April 1890 (Nos 167-169) from Schneider; and 26.11.1890 (Nos 170, 171) from Normand. An experimental group for comparative trials of machinery and boilers, each builder constructing their own version of the TE engines and boilers. As would be expected, trials results varied widely, from 20.28kts (No 163) to 24.51kts (No 149). One of the TT was fixed in the bow, and the other on a trainable mount right aft.

Modernizations: None.

Naval service: All were stricken just before World War I, except 158 which survived until 1920.
